Entry 1- Examples
On the first day of Media Arts, we saw some examples from youtube and briefly went through our overall assignment.
The first video that we saw was the Jelly Beans, where the whole entire music video was made from Jelly Beans. The video is called In Your Arms - Kina Grannis. The smooth transaction for the film really surprised me, as that would have been really hard to do with jelly beans, moving something a piece by piece, one at a time. It was really cool how a team of people, mostly volunteers spent nearly 2 years working on a single 3-4mins movie. Mr Powell stated that he really respected the people that worked on a project for a long time, as they meant that they were dedicated to their project.
We got to see the behind the scenes video for this music video, and the amount of work they put in was astonishing. I don't think I'ld be able to do that. For the shooting, they put the jelly bean scene in a box with light emitting from the short sides of the box, and the girl lying on top of a glass screen on top of the box. The part where the rotating white jelly bean was shoot by covering the girl in maché and then adding jelly beans to it. She then filmed herself rotating it in front of a green screen. Apparently, it was tiring and torturing as it was hard for her to move. The group also worked productively, with positive mindset, even if one part of the scene took several tries to take. All in all, they're amazing for being able to do that.
The second video that we saw was Valentine - Kina Grannis. The video this time was shot by using the "domino" effect. This means that the whole stop motion was created by making frames fall down, revealing the next frame. This would be a cool idea for my music video, but I realised that it would take too much time and paper for a single project. However, I might be able to do this with 10 single frames, and photoshop the drawings into the frame by placing a green screen inside the paper. This will effectively save money and time.
The third video that we watched was by Good Mythical Morning. It was a video about a t-shirt war. The stop motion was created by constantly changing t-shirts into something that suited the scene. For example, one dude lit up the bomb on another's t-shirt, and it "exploded". This was created by changing the t-shirt into a canvas for the frames, just like any stop motion. We also saw a similar video by the same guys, but this time it was sponsored by Mc Donalds. Mr. Powell told us how one great idea can lead to tons of money. I hope to make something as creative as them.
Last but not least, we watched a music video by this artist, where a girl was lying on her bed and moved as if she were to be in a "Dream". Sometimes, a man appeared, which I presume to be the artist. Apparently, the song was released a year before the music video with a different music video and was released again with this music video as it didn't get many views before. This one however, took a large hit on the charts. Mr Powell told us that no matter how bad the song is, if the music video is good, you'll make profit. Some wise words.
After that, we went through our assignment - talking about due dates, length and etc.
That's all that I've done this lesson.
