Entry 8- Character

This lesson, I started drawing the base of my main character, the suicidal boy for his first cut for the walking scene. For the drawing style, I decided to use the anime drawing style, as I realised that that is what I do best.

I first started out by drawing his body structure. I used the basic information that I usually use to draw male figures, which was relatively easy considering that only a few simple shapes were involved. After drawing the boy's base on the first layer, I then went on to draw his clothes.

The clothes was a tricky part, as I did not know what to make him wear for me to set a "sad" and "depressed" vibe. If I get him to wear dark clothes, it might seem a little too forced and he would blend in too well with the background, making viewers lose the actual focus point of the animation. If I made it too bright, the viewers would then have a different vibe from the background, making them believe that the boy is happy and well-off. And, what do I get him to wear? Should I get him to wear a hoodie, to symbolise his heavy burden? Do I get him to wear a T-shirt? Is it summer or winter?
In the end, I decided on making him wear a yellow knitted sweater so that it's not too cold and not too hot and the yellow will come in handy later, which I will explain further down the track. I also made him wear some simple denim jeans.

Drawing folds on the clothes was a hard part, as following the flow of clothing was never my thing. I had to use some basic knowledge that I had and look at other people's drawings to get the hang of it. After a while, I realised that if my protagonist moves, then the fold would also change, which means that I probably would have to draw the folds all over again, which is going to be a pain.

For the hair, I just did quick little sketches of flicks, to create his "curly"/ "wavy" hair. I wanted him to look dishevelled so that he appears to be distressed. Connecting the face to the neck was a bit tricky, as it kept on looking weirdly even after my 3rd try. In the end, I just went with what I had, as it was pretty accurate to the reference photo that I was using.

After the line art was done, I simply coloured in the base colours. The hair was brown, the sweater was yellow, the jeans were blue and his skin was, well, skin colour. I then went over it with shading on spots that I reckoned needed shading.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I might draw darkness seeping through the walls, getting closer to him, to symbolise depression.

That's all that I have done for this lesson.
