Entry 3 - Animation samples
Today we watched animations from previous years.
First, we watched the animation of Natasha's. Her animation was about getting rid of objects from a box that she kept all the stuff from her previous relationship. The video had a lighting, setting off a sad gloomy mood. The video mainly consisted of photographs and that showing a continuation of her memories. She added drawings on top of her polaroids, which was a smart idea as that would save a lot of actual polaroids. Akanksha told me that Mr Powell said that Natasha filmed everything in the Media Art room, which is quite surprising as the table in her video seemed darker than the table that we use in our Media class.
Maddie Watt's video was also quite inspirational, as she fell down from her bed into the galaxy and then into the ocean. I really liked how her hair kind of moved as she fell down, to create that sense of movement of falling down. It was kind of rigid, however, but I bet she went for that to make it seem like a stop animation. The song suited the video exceptionally well, as it was Wide Awake by Katy Perry, which is kind of what her video was about. She apparently used a green screen to create this film, and it can be shown that she did as I can see some green lines around her figure. I'm not sure if you can 100% get rid of the grene outline or not, and I hope I can try my best to do so.
The next video we watched was Sophie Pham and Sakuta Ito's. The video was about how they got sucked into a book. I don't quite remember the whole entire video, but I remember there being an interestin catchy tune that went in the background that suited the whole atmosphere of the video. I really liked how they walked in a line and the use of the green screen as they travelled around different areas. Akanksha also told me that this was apparently based on the Japanese folk tale of someone wishing a party to last forever. It kind of made sense as Sakura is Japanese. I would like to also implement some part of me into the video I'll be creating this year.
I also remember a video about 2 girls getting sucked into a pararell world, but it didn't really leave a strong impact on me, as I don't remember a lot about it. I just remember that Mr Powell saying that the video didn't make sense to a lot of viewers, as a whole lot of people that watched it didn't get it.
Mr Powell also showed us a video that implemented the idea of using colours a lot. The video was where one girl was sitting in front of the old library and looking all sad and lonely. The colours kept on flashing behind the walls, but the girl didn't have any colour on her. When someone reached a hand out to her, however, there was suddenly colour in the world. I think the use of colours to create an impactful symbolic meaning was great, as it wasn't too complicated, but viewers understood the meaning of it. Apparently, she hand did all single frames, which seemed to be more than 450 frames at least. The amount of effort she put in makes the video respectful in my opinion.
We also watched a video from a few years back called Oodle Jump by Joanne Park, back in the days where it took ages for one frame of a scene to load. It was about how a game character came out through the phone and then into the real world. I really liked how she used two types of medium, technology and claymation to create one stopmotion. I might do that for my animation for complicated bits. 10/10 tbh.
Overall, from the videos that I watched today, I learnt that the videos can be created first before the choosing of the song, as the idea behind the video is what matters the most in my opinion. We should also try our best to make things less complicated for the viewers to understand.
That's all that I did this lesson.
