Entry 1 - New Task, Examples and Ideas
Today was the first day of media, and Mr Andrews gave us our task for this term. He also showed us some examples from a group last year.
The task for this term is to create a short genre film. This can be any genre as long as the genre can be clearly depicted through your film. To do this, I obviously should see the narrative conventions of the genre as a guideline on what to include in my film. In addition, for this task, each member of our group is going to edit the film differently so that the outcomes are all different. For example, one may create the film in a linear fashion while the other creates it in a non-linear fashion. However, even with the different edits, everyone should have the same storyline.
Mr Andrews showed us two films of what the girls from last year did. Before explaining the difference between the 2 films, the basic story outline (from memory) of the film is:
-Boy A is involved in a group that hunts demons.
-Boy A is killed by a demon.
-Girl B finds a mysterious note that falls out from Boy A's Demon Hunter notebook saying "Don't Trust.."
-Girl B is trying to find out the murderer/demon that murdered her husband.
-Girl B visits the demon hunters.
-One demon hunter is reluctant on taking the case while other accepts.
-The demon hunters go to Girl B's house and set up traps that would set an alarm if a devil passes.
-Demon Hunter A tells Demon Hunter B to take upstairs while she searches downstairs.
-Demon Hunter A is actually the demon and she kills Girl B (Girl B's nose bleeds and she dies)
-Demon Hunter rips out the part that says her name from the Don't Trust (Not sure before or present)
-Demon Hunter B finds out that Demon Hunter A is killer
-Demon Hunter B tries to run away but fails and gets killed by Demon Hunter A
From the elements of the film, I can conduct that this film was supposed to be a supernatural horror. Supernatural from the demons and horror from the idea of not trying to get killed while trying to find the "Serial" murderer.
The first film had an orange undertone throughout the whole film and had the film kind of Noised (?). This really helped in creating a heavy dark atmosphere, as the orange undertone and the blackness created stuffiness and the feeling of being in a room with steamy air so you can't really breathe properly (?). However, in contrast, although the music did set the mood of the film nicely, it was too loud, making it almost impossible to hear the dialogue in some places.
The second film had a cool undertone throughout the film and didn't have any added filters. It didn't create a real heavy atmosphere like Film 1, but instead just created a cool atmosphere. It didn't give the viewers the idea of SUSPENSE, but just casual h o r r o r. The music used in this also had a cooler vibe, rather than the heavy underlining sound used in Film 1. Dialogues could be heard clearly in this film, allowing the viewers to follow the storyline in more depth.
The difference between the 2 films was; the placement of some shots, which made the storyline clearer than the other, the colour tone, which made one have a heavier atmosphere than the other, and the music, which created different ideas of suspense.
The things that I really liked about the film was the use of shadows and the cinematography. I especially liked the use of shadows for the stairs. The shadow that showed on the wall from the stairs made it seem as if something bad was upstairs as she went up. I also liked the cinematography as it was clear who was in power in some parts.
Mr Andrews also told us that we can't have BLOOD for our film because it's PG 13. This is kind of very disappointing because BLOOD is an easy narrative convention for Horror.
Mr Andrews also showed us the rough edit for this film and honestly, I'm amazed by the amount of change the group went through. The whole thing was shot in the morning, so there was no sense of suspense or atmosphere. It just looked like a good ol' American sitcom. In addition, they also had this weird scene where they rolled up in a BMW with this hip hop music playing in the background. I mean, that doesn't sound too horror to me, unless we're talking about Scary Movie.
However, I liked the part where the boy kind of flashed before disappearing and the part where the doll's head fell off in relation to the idea of the person getting killed.
An idea that I have for the genre is Romance. I really really really want to do something cute and fluffy this time. It's been 1 year and 7 months since I've been doing Media and honestly, there should be one project that's not gory and sad. I want a happy theme. I want to seem happy. Like, I don't want to look back at my Media Arts Days when I'm old and be like, Oh! Was I depressed???? Cause I was not. Anyways, back to my idea.
Since the world is going viral on the LGBT community because people are finally accepted who they are, I wanted to create a short film that works for both Homosexuals and Hetreosexuals. Therefore, I wanted the film to be shown from first person, where the "camera" and a girl goes on a date and does cute romance stuff. Maybe the short film can be about proposal and the camera preparing all these courses for the date.
The short film can also be about coming out in relation to the Pride Month. That would fill the still-life drama genre. It can have a narration while she's doing stuff to create an atmosphere.
If I am doing horror, I want to use the idea of the camera man actually being the murderer. I saw this in an anime called Hyouka, and I still believe that it was the biggest plot twist of the century. The short film could be about these group of people trying to find the murderer in a place, but it turns out that it was the camera man that haven't spoken the whole time.
I could also do a survival game where the people have to find the actual killer before the day ends. Like the wolf is a town game? That'd be cool.
