Entry 6- Photo Reflection and Two Videos

Today we looked at the images of other people's and also 2 videos of the task from the previous year.

For each group, we were allowed 5 mins to analyse and discuss with our partner on whether the photos suit the idea of the category.

Equal

-The photo on the right doesn't seem as if they're equal as she is standing off a little to the left, which kind of corners her as there is less space. The spatial positioning makes her seem less powerful than the picture on the picture on the left. The girl on the right also has a darker exposure, which makes her seem evil.

-The photo seems as if they're equal as the iris/pupils are positioned in the same place. They're also both staring directly at the camera. The spatial positioning on both photos are equal. The two photos also has the same exposure.

Powerful and Weak

-The girl on the left (powerful) doesn't seem that powerful as her expression is not shown. The setting.background is good, as it's quite obvious that it's a low to high angle shot, as she's standing at the edge of the balcony. The girl is also not really looking down, but rather off to the distance. The girl on the right (weak) seems less powerful as there is a shadow cast over her face. I also really like the way that it's an over the shoulder shot, as it makes the powerful girl take up more frame space than the weak girl.

-The photo on the left (powerful) is really good, as the camera is shot from a low height, which makes the girl seem bigger and more important with the low to high angle shot. There is also a shadow cast over her face while there is light shining on her back, which reinforces the idea of her being important. The girl on the right (weak) does seem weak as she is up against a wall. Her whole entire body is also covered in shadow, which makes her seem weak.

The things that Mr Andrews criticised about our photos were:

Bring the powerful one closer and to the centre and don't put a line straight through a person's head.

He also gave some tips:

-Don't put harsh background light on the person's head
-Little space for the weak character to show that she's in a small space
-The negative and positive difference between a character and a background is great
-Background being blurred shows that she's important

Two Videos

The two videos that we watched were about finding oneself and finding a murderer.

For the finding oneself, the film used dark exposure lighting with a blue filter, that added an effect of eerie and sadness. She also used lots of graphic matches between the eyes, which made the film seem more interesting and "hectic". There was a scene where she looked to the side where there was little frame space, portraying how clustered she feels on the inside. It was smart on how she used a mirror to represent the idea of finding oneself. The way she used temporal editing where she opened up another door that wasn't the door to her room to get to her room was also smart, as it effectively decreased the time of the film yet conveyed what it needed to. I also liked how in the end, the audiences were clarified how she was free and that she finally found herself by ripping the page of her problems from the diary.

For the finding a murderer, the film used a yellow tint filter when they were going through files to make it seem old and time-consuming. The way they also went through lots of files hinted the idea of them being an important detective. The idea of finding a murderer was clear from the start of the film as there was a note saying find me. There was also lots of quick edits, which made the viewers confused and just made the whole thing hectic, as if it's trying to show how she was feeling. It was cool how they used the shadow technique to show that she was killed by the killer at the end. It kept it PG but conveyed the message well.

That's all we did this lesson.

I have a little rant. As I mentioned in my previous post, I had this idea of having the girl finding her name, which is like finding oneself. It's like finding oneself because she's trying to find out what she exactly is and if she is actually real. This kind of clashes with the finding oneself idea, so I have this strong feeling of not being able to do the film idea anymore, which is really sad.
