Entry 17- 3 backgrounds and Additional Stuff
Today, I drew a bench for the lover, a desk for the father and added the opening of the sleeping pills in the background cut.
For the bench, I was easily available to draw it, as it was the same process as last time with the chair. I just had to draw a 2D looking chair made up of rectangles, and add some intricate designs. this time, however, the shading was a bit hard. After drawing up the shades, I realised that a chair would have to shade underneath the actual seat, I didn't want to overuse the straight line technique, so I added some lines that went in different ways. I tried to make the chair as symmetrical as possible, but after doing so, I realised that I could have just drawn the after half, copy and paste it and flip it so that it matched the other side. I didn't do that after I finished it, however, as I put effort into making it symmetrical. This bench is kind of different from the one that I drew in the storyboard, but this is okay as storyboard is meant to be the guide for my animation. I am planning to reuse this bench for the affected person #6, which is the main character himself. As seen in my storyboard, this bench is going to be the "special place", and is going to appear once again when he marries his lover.
The desk was tricky, as I wanted the desk to be drawn from a bird's POV at an angle. I didn't want a repetitive same POV for all my backgrounds, as that I would appear effortless and boring. I was wondering what a father's office desk would have, and after a bit of pondering, I realised that an office person would need a notebook or some type of book. I didn't want to add in a computer to his desk, as I wanted the job to be open for anyone, and putting a computer would narrow the job of a father. Since I didn't want the desk to be something just four legged, I added a border looking thing at the front, to make it seem "fancy". I used the same shading technique for this background, but this time, I shaded more on the left side of the desk, I thought that that would be the place a light would not reach and the camera would catch.
I also continued working on my bathroom and finished the colouring and the shading of it. The background is once again filled in with monochrome colours, but this time, there are colours as it's the "real life", and I wanted to show that by the difference in colours. The shading technique is once again the same, and I should probably fix my full bathroom's shading style as it would look out of place.
As seen in my storyboard, there's a scene where the main character opens up the mirror to reach out for his sleeping pills. This scene is really complicated, as I need to draw the reflective side of him, and make the mirror shelf open. To draw the main character, I first drew the figure by using the fat stick figure drawing technique. This technique is where I draw the person without anything, but just like the art wooden doll, so that I have a sense of the MC's anatomy. I first started out by drawing the MC's hand, as I wanted the hand to grasp onto the mirror, and be the focus point. This step was kind of easy and hard, as we practised drawing hands in art class, but I am not really good at drawing hands. I had to use my own hand as a reference and see where my bones (fingers) would be when I grasp onto something. I repositioned my hand by using the transform tool in the end. For the arms, I just drew 2 fat baguettes, and a circle in the middle, to represent the elbow. I didn't really care about the arm structure, as it would be covered by the sweater that he'd be wearing. For the reflected space in the mirror, I just drew a wooden art doll with an arm reaching to the other side.
After knowing where the anatomy of the MC's character would be, I started drawing the overall drawing. I traced the hands in a fine 1pt pen and drew a sweater over the arm. I wanted the sweater to cover the wrist, as the wrist did not turn out looking good. I added in the folds on where I thought it'd be and added the most folds near the elbow. For the reflected space, I didn't draw the hair nor the face, as I kept on messing it up. I'm planning to draw a character profile at home, to see what kind of fair and hair I would like the MC to have. The drawing of the clothes was simple, I just had to draw the clothes like I did for my male character for the hallway.
I coloured in the hands and the arm of the MC (not the reflected one) as well this lesson. It was hard finding the right colours for the clothes and the hands, as photoshop did not have the colour wheel I was seeking for. Since I didn't want to lose the colours that I have found, I drew a big circle next to the areas that I coloured so that I could just eye drop it next time. For the hands, I just coloured it in recklessly with a pen, and added pink as my shading with an airbrush to make it seem "alive". I coloured the arm with a similar yellow colour and shaded it with an airbrush with a darker yellow colours. I erased the colours that went out of the line art.
I also thought of drawing the heart inside the affected people, and turning that into a spear, rather than a spear coming out of nowhere. This will also create a stronger metaphor of the protagonist hurting the people's heart, and that hurting him back.
That's all that I've done this lesson.
