Entry 19- Family

Today I finally started drawing the characters for the animation. Instead of drawing them on photoshop like I usually do, I decided to draw them on my other drawing app that I usually use; Paint Tool Sai. Since I'm used to drawing on Paint Tool Sai, I was hoping that I'd get good results out of it.

I opened up a new document with the dimensions of 1600 x 1300 like always. This time, however, I transferred the image of the bed to my first layer, so I had a sense of idea on where my mum should be drawn. I added a new layer and then drew a fat stick figure to get a basic idea of how the mum was going to be positioned. After that, I added another layer and starting drawing the clothes, leaving the face and the hair for the last. Drawing the clothes were harder than I thought, as the body position didn't seem right, even thought it did when it was just a stick figure. In the end, I had to select all and free deform it to make it seem better. I then did her hair, which was just plain black with no shading, and covered her face with a hand. Drawing hands were never my thing, so I had to stare at my hand for a good min to get it "right." I then shaded her with lines on another layer. After all that, I saved the drawing and named it Mum 1. I then went back to my document, selected the upper half of the mum's body, stretched it a little upwards, and saved it as Mum 2. This way, when I loop Mum 1 and 2 together, it'd seem as if she's shaking her shoulders and crying.

For my Dad, I did the same thing as the mum. I opened up a new document, transferred the desk background and drew a fat stick figure on the second layer. I then drew the sleeves for the dad, a shoulder and then the details for the salaryman suit, such as necktie, collar and etc. I then started drawing his face, and unlike the storyboard, I decided to add glasses to him, so that he appears "old" and what I imagine a stereotypical dad to look like. I then drew hands over his face, which once again, was a pain, and shaded him with lines on another layer. I saved this copy as Dad 1 as a JPG file. I selected the upper half of his body, stretched it a little upwards, and then saved it as Dad 2.

For the brother, I repeated the steps that I did for the previous characters, but this time with the Desk 2 background. This time, I did not draw a fat stick figure, but instead went straight into drawing him. Since I wanted his head to be covered with a hood, I had to guess what the top of the hood would look like when bending down. After I drew it, I added some clothes sleeves crossing over one another, and some legs underneath the desk. I shaded it with lines. I saved the drawing and named it Boy 1. I then went back to my document, selected the boy's hood, stretched it a little upwards, and saved it as Boy 2.

That's all that I've done this lesson.
