Entry 13 - Rough Edit
Today I roughly edited the shots that I had for now.
I just put the shots that I had for now into a sequence of events with the guide of my shot list. While putting down some shots, I realised that it didn't really flow smoothly. Some shots were really disjointed, where the next shot just jumped out of nowhere. To fix this, I either had to cut the shot into something that would correlate nicely with the previous shot.
For example:
1. I had to cut the first few seconds of my second shot, as it looked nicer for her to start off looking sideways, instead of her looking straight on for a second and then moving left and right. This created a better sense of panic.
2. I cut down the first few seconds of where she stops and then runs down the stairs to just her running down the stairs as it matched better with the previous shot of her running out the frame. This way, the shots worked in a smooth motion.
3. I had to crop the previous shot where it zooms in on Satan's face to match with the shot where he smiles as the face kind of jumped from one position to another.
Some of the shots were so bad that I couldn't even try to save them, so we have to reshoot them.
For example:
1. The first shot, where the girl runs towards the camera needs to be reshot. This is because she ran out of the frame, rather than stop, which would have connected to the next shot of her breathing at the same spot.
2. The scene where she flinches and stops needs to be reshot, as she doesn't stop for a long time. It's weird for her to just close her eyes for a second and open them back up when she's about to be killed.
Some of the shots, I just edited to create a better sense of panic.
For example:
1. I cropped a shot from a long to a medium so that it seemed as if she was to be cornered even more by her troubles.
2. I made the part where Satan smiles slower to create a eerie creepy feeling for the viewers.
3. I made the scene where Satan comes closer to Sarah a bit quicker so that Satan came with a quick bang bang bang and the audience goes like what just happened.
4. I sped up the water drowning scenes to create a quick edit where the audience are confused. This also created a sense of chaos, which was what the girl was feeling at that time. I also used the flip filter to make it seem like alice in wonderland. Reusing some drowning scenes in between other drowning scenes was a good idea, because it felt all jumbled up like her memories.
I also used the colour correction tool to make my video seem nicer. I brought the shadows down to the middle for the scenes where she was just running around looking for the exit. However, I gradually turned both shadows and highlights lower as I came near the scene where satan appeared. I used contrast and brightness only when the scene was too bright to not be able to be fixed by adjusting the shadows and highlights. I put the saturation of the clip to the middle of the lower section to make the video seem grayish, since it's her mind. I kind of wanted to represent the film, Coraline. I used the temperature tool to make the colour cooler. The only videos that I did not tweak darker were the ones where she finds the swimming pool, because she's supposed to live after finding it. I adjusted the highlights to be higher instead.
The rest of the shots were alright, but we're going to see if we can film better ones next afternoon. We have lots of scenes missing for our film because we did not have enough time, so we would have to film it after the rough edit meeting session.
Some of the shots that are missing:
1. Her looking back again at Satan after she feels something is off.
2. Her looking down at the map to see where to go and what she's trying to find.
3. Her standing in front of the swimming pool building.
4. Her waking up from coma.
That's all the editing that I've done.
