Entry 17 - Final Editing
After putting all the shots that we took last time into one, we just had to edit and cut down out time to a minute now. I hate having to cut down our time because that would mean that some of the scenes that we took would not be usable. We spent so much time and effort into it, so it's kind of sad.
Before deleting the scenes, we edited the whole thing first. One of the major ones that we edited by cutting were:
1. Satan walking towards Sarah. We cut off the bits where I moved, trying to make it seem like a fast quick teleportation movement. However, Sarah and I realised that she moved her head a lot, so we took out some shots where the difference between her head positions was huge. After that, we went back in with the crop tool to try and match the positions of Sarah's head.
2. We split the scene where she looks back and then looks to the front again in half and then added the empty pathway scene in the middle. We did this so that it matched with her looking back and seeing nothing, and then looking frontwards again.
We then started deleting the shots, which includes:
1. Her looking sideways and then running off the frame. We deleted this because the motive of this scene was to show that she's looking around to see where to go, but this was implied in the previous shot, where she looked sideways and then looked down on the map. We, however, kept the part where she runs out of the frame because that flowed smoothly with the next scene of her running towards the door.
2. We deleted the scene where she runs down the stairs to get to the door because it was unnecessary and it didn't really flow nicely with the previous scene. In the previous scene she runs straight, but in this scene, she was running down the stairs. It was much better to just keep her running on a flat surface.
3. We deleted her throwing her hands up after realising that the door is locked because that didn't flow nicely with the next scene as the background did not match one another.
4. We deleted the shot where the camera zooms in Satan's face because the shot didn't even look nice or was necessary for the film. The shot wasn't positioned correctly for the next shot where Satan smiles, so it was a visible tacky edit.
We dramatically sped up some shots:
1. The bit where she gets up because it was unnecessarily long. We, however, was careful on not speeding it up too much to the point where she looks hasty from the start.
2. The bit where she runs down the stairs because it looked more like walking.
3. The bit where Satan comes to choke her so that it would seem as if she couldn't get away from being killed. I hate it when the character dies from a situation where she could have obviously gotten away with, so I did not want to make him come slow.
4. The bit where she looks sideways to see where he's disappeared to, because she's in a nerve wrecking moment, so she wouldn't just slowly look around.
5. The scene where she closes the door because Satan could have obviously caught up with her if she shut the door slowly.
6. The water scenes to create a quick edit and a sense of chaos.
After editing, we realised that we should change the ending so that she finds the exit but dies so that we could save so much more time. Therefore, we asked Mr Andrews if we could do that, and he recommended the idea for us to make her reach out of the water to live, but then slowly put her hands down to drown. That afternoon Sarah took that video and sent it to me.
I added the video to the end. I then went ahead and quickly just edited the video more and cut out little pieces of shots that could be cut and sped things up unnoticeably.
After making it reach at least under 1min and 10 secs from 2 mins, I started working on the sounds.
From google, I searched for some creepy abandoned amusement park sound. I wanted to do this as at the start of American Horror Story, the abandoned sound really sets up the whole horror tone of the film. I used this sound from the start of the film to where Satan appears and then again when Satan disappears to when she falls in water. I had to fade the sound out when it ended so that it did not end abruptly.
I then added Suspense Accents 06 from sound effects for the part where Satan comes up behind her and tried matching the heightened parts with when he moved so that the sound matched the tempo of the film.
Suspense Accents 03 was used to have a dramatic sound effect when he suddenly appears right in front of her as soon as she turned back.
Suspense Accent 05 was used when he came to choke Sarah, as it had a gradual sound that became louder at the end.
I used small child giggle when Satan appeared with the water and cup, to show that for Satan, it's an "innocent child's play". In addition, in most horror movies, there are a lot of creepy kid giggles in a haunted house before something bad starts to happen, because it's funny for them that someone is going to get killed from their "trap".
We also added a fast heart sound at the start of the film and then a dead heart sound at the end of the film to symbolise that she is dead. We changed the background to black instead of a heart monitor, because that took too much time.
That's the end of our film production.
