Entry 3- Image Analysis

This high to low angle long shot shows an image of a man walking out from a building. From the detail that was put in the gateway, it may be a hotel or an apartment. However, since the door is small, there's a higher chance that it is an apartment. The fill light effectively dimly lights up the background, making the place seem ominous and mysterious, creating that typical film noir atmosphere. The dark street suggests that this was shot during the night time, further enhancing the ominous atmosphere. From the harsh backlighting behind the man, the man's whole frontal side is shadowed, making him seem evil and suspicious. The elongated shadow of the man also creates the effect of him being powerful. Since the man is not moving, but rather staring down at his shadow, he may be thinking deeply, which might imply that he's a detective.

This shot has more exposure than the previous shot, as the background can be clearly seen. In this photo, it seems that the person is running towards the lit tunnel in an alley. On the wall, there is a shadow, and since the shadow is not connected to the bottom of the guy's feet but instead connects to the tunnel, it is implied that the guy is chasing after someone. Since the guy is not darkly lit, we can tell that the guy is probably the good guy and that he's chasing after the bad guy. However, the tunnel where the bad guy is lit, so the bad guy may also be the good guy????

From the two photos, I can conclude that in film noirs, a lot of the "climax" scenes happens when there's not a lot of people. In addition, the use of lighting is very important as it shows the atmosphere of the scene. Lighting can also be used to create a sense of ambiguity towards a character.

At first sight, this photo seems as if they're discussing something in a close off diner, but if you look closer, the room in the back shows a desk with a light stand on it. This means that this hideout place is either an office or a house. From the positioning, it seems that the guy on the left is the ring leader, as the other two are positioning their body towards him while the left guy is not positioning his body towards them. However, the guy in the middle seems the most important, as his body is not cut out of the shot. They seem to be like good people from the lighting that's fully hitting their faces.

The title of this shot is, THE GUMSHOES. INT. WEST L.A., OSCAR SLADE DETECTIVE AGENCY, INC.—NIGHT . From the sub-context given in the vanity fair description, it seems as if a murder case happened in town and they're trying to solve it. A femme fatale may be involved from what James, (the left guy) said about having to meet dames.

This shot shows a scene from an interrogation. The detective, who is smoking the cigarette is probably talking bad about the women and how she's evil because she did all this stuff. Therefore, the woman is glaring at him and is sitting in a defensive position. The detective's face and body position further show that he thinks of the woman as a mere nuisance, as he isn't even looking at her when she's supposed to be the main focus in the room. However, since the woman's face is not half-lit or dimly lit but instead fully lit, it implies that the woman might actually be a protagonist. However, the man in the back seems to be evil from the half covered face with shadow. In addition, he's keeping an eye at the detective instead of the woman, making it seem as if he's aiming for the detective to end up bad. The police is also in a position where he can easily take out his baton to strike down a person.

The title of this shot is, THE INTERROGATION. INT. HOLLYWOOD PRECINCT HOUSE—NIGHT. From the sub-context, it seems that the detective is actually interested in her, but not interested in her because she's the main suspect, but because she's just a pretty young lady. He's kind of taking her lightly from her appearance. The sub-context also covertly indicates that the woman is a femme fatale. Therefore, she might be glaring because her seduction isn't really working. The police on the other hand is just angry at them both for flirting.
