Entry 6 - Story Draft 1

Brief plan (What we have for now):

Main character’s family member (brother) is brutally murdered in the middle of the night. He spends the film trying to find the killer in order to avenge his brother's death. He thinks the murderer is the femme fatale who is the late girlfriend of his brother. However, in reality, the guy has a multiple personality disorder and he actually killed the family member as the other personality was "jealous" of him.

For scenes where the crime happens, low-key lighting is going to be used to dimly cover up the main characters face. This is because we want to never reveal the actual murderer until the end of the film. This is going to create a suspicious atmosphere. The audience may think that the face is dimly lit only because the character is evil, but it's just actually to cover up one's face. For the murder scenes, we're planning to use flashbacks (snippets) from the main character's perspective throughout the film. The flashbacks can be in a canted shot to show the main character's confusion of the flashback, as he doesn't remember doing all these stuff.

Characters:

Multiple Personality - Is searching for the murderer but actually the murderer.

Femme fatale - has a boyfriend but only for the money

Brother - Dead

Weird bits of the story:

First of all, we don't have an ending. We're not sure if we want the boy to get away with murder by knowing that he has split personality or not knowing that he has. Or, we could do it where the femme fatale convinced the guy to kill the brother. We also need this climax scene to show the real murderer to the audience, but I'm not really sure how that'd work out.

Things could go three-way (not discussed with teammates):

1. The guy gets the memories of the other side and then realises that he killed his brother. This leads to extreme guilt and he plans to commit suicide to follow his brother. The femme fatale sees him and tries to stop him because if the brother commits suicide, she won't be able to get the insurance money. The guy causes a ruckus and changes into his other personality. The other personality realises that the femme fatale was just using him and therefore decides to commit suicide with the femme fatale so that he can meet her in hell.

2. The guy doesn't know that he has a split personality, but he gets put in jail because there was evidence of his crime in the murder scene and etc. He believes that the femme fatale framed him and curses at the femme fatale saying that she killed the guy. The guy ends up in jail while femme fatale leaves with money.

3. The guy does actually know that he has split personality, and he decides to trick the femme fatale. It's like killing two birds with one stone. He gets rid of his brother and also the femme fatale who looked down on him thinking that he'd get tricked easily. In the murder and crime scenes, the other personality purposely left evidence of femme fatale. At the end, there will be a climax scene where he talks about how she thought she would get away with everything. The femme fatale is confused and the police arrives at the door. The femme fatale says that he's the murderer, but the police arrests her instead.

Another problem is the limit in time. The short film is about 2 to 3 minutes long, and I'm afraid that the whole split personality idea might be too complicated for the audience to understand in a short amount of time. I really like the idea of split personality as it's unique, but I really want to make a good film.

In addition, this time, I'll be sure to try and use reflectors and film a lot of the scenes inside to manipulate the lighting.
