Entry 13 - Making of Jane
At home, I started to make the girl.
I wanted my animation to be a claymation, so I started off by creating her head with a skin coloured clay. After thinking through, I realised that I would not have enough clay for her whole body, so I had to think of another strategy. Remembering last year's mask that I made for art class, I decided to make a paper mache sculpture.
I didn't have any newspaper in my house, so I had to use magazines, which was extremely hard to work with as they were hard. After ripping the magazine into strips, I started to stuff them at the edge of a plastic bag. I wanted to create the head first, so I would know how big my body should be. Creating the size of head that I wanted, I twisted the remaining plastic bag into a rope, and then taped the start of it onto the head. I then cut off the excess rope that was not stuck to my head. I repeated this step for the rest of my body portions.
Now that I had a head, a torso and a big semi-cone like thing for the dress, I was all set to paper mache it. Since I didn't have any actual paper mache glue, I had to elaborate by mixing warm water with PVA glue. The process of me putting paper towel on every portion took me a while, as I had to repeat on making paper mache glue.
When the paper mache finally dried, I painted the head with skin colour. Whilst I was waiting for that to dry, I acquired a turquoise/blue shade of paint and painted the backside of the skirt. After that, I got a similar coloured clay and rolled it out flat. I then got a goldish coloured clay and made a thin strip of to stick next to the other rolled out clay. I carefully placed the clay onto the skirt and moulded it so that it seemed 3d with folds. I used paint to blend the clay with the skirt.
For the torso, I used green paint to paint it's backside. Using the similar gold colour as people, I again created a thin strip of it and created a big V shape on the frontside of the torso. I used green clay to fill in the rest of the blank, outside the V. Inside the V, I left some space for the skin, and then added white ruffle like textures to it.
After the face dried, I got a long brown thread and then started to hot glue them down to create hair. At first, I did it individually, but afterwards, I wrapped the thread around my fingers and then just glued it on as a whole, after taking it off of my fingers. I burnt my fingers a couple of times, but it's all chill.
I then cut out two rectangular shapes on a white fabric with little tabs on the top. I added a dab of hot glue on the tab and then put an unfolded paper click on it. I glued the rectangle into a cylinder with hot glue gun. I glued the tab onto the torso, where the arm should be. I repeated this step for the other fabric.
Using a unfolded paper clip, I poked a hole on the top centre of the skirt glued the paper clip in position. I made a similar hole in the torso on the bottom, but this time, I didn't glue the paper stick in. I repeated the steps for the top part of the torso and the bottom of the neck.
That's all that I did today.
